How I Work - I Am the Storyteller
When ancient people sat around their
fires, when clay pots and stone tools were
cutting-edge technology, they shared experiences and made meaning
through story. Tellers keep histories of their clans, names
and sequence of events for generations past. We can archive Story
in books and on hard drives. But only when audience and Teller
make eye contact, in real time, Story becomes an interactive process;
like dancers moving to the same rhythm.
All over the world,
on porch swings and around kitchen tables, parents
recount to their children how their grandparents met in the rain,
on the ferry crossing Puget Sound; or at a carnival where she
sold tickets, and he ran the Ferris wheel. Children sit cross
legged on library carpets, caught up in the adventure of “Ali
Baba and the Forty Thieves.” With subtle cues and improvised
timing, tales becomes personal experience with a unique place in
time. Marketing executives forget for a moment, who they are. It’s
just a seminar, but as Fairytale entertains it also affirms the
importance of attention to detail and the power of a kept promise.
Oral Tradition is a well kept secret;
but it is well. Story is the legacy
of language, tracks of our culture, and I am The
StoryTeller.
